I've been visiting this special island for over 50 years. I'm delighted to open our home-away-from-home there, Retreat at Villas by the Sea, to guests.  Below are some photos of Retreat and more information about the island and our villa.  For more information or if you are interested in renting, drop me an email on the Contact Me page above.  If you're looking for a quiet getaway, Jekyll just may be the perfect place for you.

Thanks for visiting Oak Mountain Medley!

Retreat is truly our home away from home, and we are delighted to share it with visitors to 'our' island.  Decorated in an ocean/lighthouse theme, Retreat is a comfortable, homey home-base for your visit to Jekyll Island.  Nestled beneath sheltering live oaks, just a short walk from the beach, Retreat offers relaxation and comfort to her guests.

Retreat is a one bedroom/one bath villa.  We have a complete kitchen with dining area.  There is a full-size sofa sleeper that adds a place for children or an extra adult to sleep.  The bathroom has a step-in shower with a bench and grab bars, making it convenient for anyone who needs a little extra security in the shower.

We have a patio in back that overlooks live oaks and the children's playground, complete with pirate ship for little sailors to enjoy.  The solar heated pool with kiddie pool is a short walk away behind the office/restaurant complex.  Our patio is just steps away from one of the Villas By The Sea grills and a picnic table.

I keep a collection of books for children and adults in the lower section of the TV cabinet.  Retreat has a flat-screen TV and DVD player for your entertainment.  Villas By The Sea offers free Wi-Fi.  There is a fitness center in the building next to ours, and the central office building has a business center with computers and printers for guests to use.  Villas' restaurant, the Driftwood Bistro, has delicious food and a bar area overlooking the pool.  There is a gift shop/snack area in the office building that sells a selection of microwaveable foods, snacks, ice cream, resort clothing, and gifts.

Linens are included, along with included check-out maid service/cleaning.  We rent only through Parker-Kaufman Realty on the island.  To check Retreat's availability and learn about deposits, fees/taxes, etc., please follow this link to their site:

Villa By The Sea features a wonderful boardwalk by the ocean, complete with chairs for ocean-gazing or reading, plus a large gazebo.  As you walk to the ocean from Retreat, you will pass the garden area with a fountain and seating for relaxation.  Directly across from Villas is Horton Pond, a wildlife viewing area with a covered viewing area.  An artificial island in the pond's center provides a resting place for turtles, birds, and alligators.

Biking is a must on Jekyll Island, and you can rent bikes right at Villas By The Sea.  Miles of paved bike paths cover the island, providing wonderful close-up views of the island's ecosystems of beach, maritime forest, and salt marsh.  Just north of our Retreat Villa is the entrance to a wonderful bike ride through the marsh.  It leads to the fishing pier with easy access to beautiful Driftwood Beach.

About Jekyll Island

For those seeking a balance between development with the amenities it provides and natural solitude, Jekyll Island strikes the perfect balance.  Owned by the state of Georgia and administered by the Jekyll Island Authority, the island offers quiet paths through beautiful maritime forests, secluded beaches, bike paths beside spreading salt marshes, and plenty of wildlife. Tidelands Nature Center teaches visitors and residents alike about the fascinating creatures that dwell on the island and in the waters around it.  The Georgia Sea Turtle  Center is a must-see to learn about the endangered loggerhead sea turtles and see its rehabilitating patients up close.

On the other hand, the new shopping complex near Great Dunes Park and the shops on Pier Road have something for everyone - shops, snacks, and dining.  The island's golf courses and tennis complex provide opportunities for sport, and the historic district appeals to those interested in history and architecture.

If you would like o learn more about our island, I have written books about Jekyll and barrier islands in general.  Just click on the Oak Mountain Press tab at the top of this page to browse and order.
